1. Protect yourself from the sun
Swimming in the ocean is a wonderful way to cool off and enjoy the sun, but it's essential to remain safe. The first thing to consider is proper sun protection, even before you leave the house. Before putting on your swimsuits, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply it generously, and remember to reapply at least every 2 hours.Don't forget to bring your umbrella and look for shade, especially when the sun is the strongest between 11 am and 3 pm. Bring your best hat with a wide brim to cover your head, face, ears and neck! You can also opt for bathing suits and anti-UV clothes, and don't forget your sunglasses.
2. Never go swimming alone and inform your friends that you're going for a dip
Accidental drownings occur mainly due to carelessness and lack of safety precautions. The sea is unpredictable; it can be calm and peaceful one minute and tumultuous the next. When you arrive at the beach, always check the flag's colour to ensure it is safe to swim.If you can't swim, don't go too far. Stay close to the shore. If you can swim, always be aware of your surroundings and invite a family member or a friend to swim with you. If not, make sure you always inform your group of friends that you are going for a dip.

3. Make sure someone is watching the children at all times
As soon as you arrive at Aboiteau Beach, explain to children that they should always be within sight! Provide continuous supervision, especially for toddlers unaware of the danger. For added peace of mind, don't hesitate to share the care of the children with the other adults present.Even if the children are equipped with inflatable armbands and other flotation devices, they must stay close to you while they are in the water!
Set up a play area for children, and ensure they wear the proper flotation gear. Do not use floating toys that can drift away. Keep these items for the pool only.
4. Stay hydrated and make sure you don't drink too much alcohol
When the weather is hot and sunny, you must be careful about dehydration! In hot weather, adding an extra 1.5 litres of water to your drinking habits is recommended. Don't wait until you are thirsty to drink because if you feel thirsty, you are starting to get dehydrated!Drink regularly throughout your day at the beach and choose temperate water for maximum hydration. Beware of hot, sugary, and alcoholic drinks; they will only dehydrate you further. Avoid them if possible, or consume them in moderation.
5. If you get away from shore, don't fight the current and waves
Awareness of the dangers of swimming in the ocean is critical. One of the most common dangers is being swept out to sea by a strong current. If you are dragged out by the current, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current; then, slowly make your way back to shore.Waves can be surprisingly powerful, and it's easy to get caught in a rising tide. Never turn your back on a wave; it can knock you over and pull you under. If a wave is coming at you, dive under it or jump over it just before it breaks.
Remember, swimming parallel to the shore is the best way to stay safe. This will allow you to stay safe while enjoying the unique experience of swimming in the open ocean.
